ATEC 186: Automotive Diagnostics

Troubleshoot and diagnose new and late model electrical and gas vehicles. Students will learn diagnostic methods, identify engine performance and battery issues, read computerized control system components, and customer service skills. This class may include students from multiple sections.

This class has a $60 Automotive Technology course fee.

  1. Diagnose common automotive issues and recommend/perform proper repairs
  2. Identify and interpret engine performance concerns; determine needed action
  3. Diagnose abnormal engine noises or vibration concerns; determine needed action
  4. Diagnose the cause of excessive oil consumption, coolant consumption, unusual exhaust color, odor, and sound; determine needed action
  5. Identify computerized control system components and configurations
  6. Access and use service information to perform step-by-step (troubleshooting) diagnosis
