Learning Assistance

The Learning Center

Tutoring and learning assistance is free and available to all students, including online students. Students at all levels and abilities are encouraged to utilize Learning Center services to support their learning. The Math Center is on the first floor of Maier Hall (Building E) in room E-141. The Writing Center, located in the Library (Building B), offers free writing, research, and tutoring support. A computer lab and computer support (including help with online classes) are also available in the Library. The Extension site in Forks has their own Learning Center that include these support services.

Tutoring

The following types of tutoring are available:
•    One-on-one peer tutoring through the Tutoring Center
•    Writing Center tutoring to support English and writing for any class
•    Research & Reading tutoring from librarians through the Writing Center
•    eTutoring (online tutoring assistance)
•    Math Center tutoring for all Peninsula College math courses
•    Computer tutoring and support in the Library’s Computer Lab

Writing Center

At the Writing Center, students can make individual appointments for writing help, or they may schedule with librarians to support research. In addition, librarians can share strategies for reading academic texts. The Writing Center is open weekdays as well as one evening to all students engaged in writing projects in any discipline. Students sign up for 30 or 60-minute response sessions, which are available in-person or online. During these sessions, tutors will discuss the paper’s strengths and weaknesses, focusing first on larger issues such as clarifying ideas, developing and supporting those ideas, structuring them for readability and coherence, and using correct grammar and punctuation. The center can also help students understand an assignment’s expectations and generate ideas before they begin their writing.

Math Center

The Math Center is a drop-in tutoring center for math students—no appointments are required. Our friendly math tutors are current and recent Peninsula College students who can help you understand instructor expectations, clarify concepts, teach you calculator and mathematical technology tips, practice problems with you, help you complete your assignments, and more. You can bring your laptop or use one of our computers to access your classes, and there are coffee and snacks to boost your energy for doing math.

Tutoring Center

Individual one-on-one tutors are available for most classes other than math or English and can be requested using the Tutor Request Form. Students receive up to 15 hours of tutoring per class, per quarter. Most tutors are available in person or virtually, depending on student preference.
