DHYG 122: General and Oral Pathology

This course covers general pathological processes and the study of diseases and conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial structures. Special emphasis is placed on the recognition of clinical signs and symptoms of disease, the diagnostic process, and the treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases and disorders. This class may include students from multiple sections.

  1. Identify the eight categories of information for making a definitive diagnosis of an oral lesion.
  2. Identify the variants of normal and benign conditions in the oral cavity.
  3. Demonstrates correct use of scientific terms to describe extra/intraoral lesions.
  4. Describe the clinical signs and microscopic events associated with inflammation and repair.
  5. Describe traumatic injuries to soft and hard tissues and the contributory factors.
  6. Describe traumatic injuries to soft and hard tissues and the contributory factors.
  7. Differentiate between hypersensitivity, autoimmune reactions, and immunodeficiency.
  8. Identify the etiological organisms, routes of transmission and the oral manifestations of infectious disease.
  9. Explain the role that the human papilloma virus plays in oropharyngeal cancer.
  10. Describe the characteristic of developmental disorders as compared to normal developmental patterns and the related oral/systemic manifestations.
  11. Describe the basic concepts of genetics and genetic abnormalities as compared to expected inheritance patterns.
  12. Explain the difference between benign and malignant tumors and describe the diagnostic process for a definitive diagnosis for neoplastic pathologies.
  13. Identify the general characteristics of endocrine, blood, gastrointestinal, connective tissue, and bone along with their associated oral pathologies.
  14. Evaluate the scientific literature as it relates to commonly encountered oral pathological conditions.
