Teacher Candidates will explore theories, methods and materials for developing literacy skills including oral (listening and speaking) and written (reading and writing) language. Specific focus on assessment, word study, vocabulary development, fluency, writing, and the science of reading. This class may include students from multiple sections.

Course Outcomes
- Select and plan to implement a wide range of assessment tools and practices for literacy learning.
- Explain the importance of interpreting assessment results to inform instruction.
- Articulate why the variability of reading levels of students in the same grade matters for how we instruct, differentiate, and assess.
- Plan instructional interventions for individuals and flexible groups.
- Demonstrate how to interpret assessment data to plan and revise effective instruction that meets the needs of all students, including those at different developmental stages and those from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Develop an ability to include a broad range of texts including works representing and authored by a range of cultures, genders, and ethnicities globally and within the United States and for multiple audiences.
- Demonstrate an ability to include historical context in the planning for the teaching of literature.
- Articulate the elements of literature, explain how elements of genre influence comprehension of text, and why this is important for students' learning.
