EDUC 430: Learning Social Studies

Teacher Candidates will examine the structure/content of K-8 Social Studies curriculum, identifying and practicing research-based instructional and assessment approaches. Emphasis will be placed on strategies to engage learners in participatory citizenship, inquiry, and diverse ways of knowing, being, and doing. This class may include students from multiple sections.

Prerequisites

Teacher Education BAS Program Admittance; Concurrent enrollment in EDUC 445

  1. Analyze social studies standards with a view to developing civic participation.
  2. Facilitate a variety of classroom discussion formats to practice various dialogue and inquiry skills.
  3. Create learning environments where students practice skills of social studies inquiry.
  4. Create learning environments which involve students in civic engagement and decision making.
  5. Evaluate the role of historical events and themes and how they shape the present and future in the Northwest, the United States, the world, and tribal, indigenous, and diverse cultures.
  6. Identify and use effective formative assessment methodologies across the disciplines of social studies.
  7. Access and develop classroom-based assessments to assess social studies content knowledge and civic behaviors.
  8. Create learning environments which engage students in local and global issues.
  9. Explain how social studies can support a linguistically, culturally, developmentally, trauma responsive approach to teaching and learning.
