EDUC 450: Health and Wellness

This course provides integration of strategies and activities for incorporating physical education and health into the elementary school setting with a focus on wellness. Concepts and skills will be introduced for promoting a safe and healthy lifestyle. This class may include students from multiple sections.

Prerequisites

Teacher Education BAS Program Admittance

  1. Demonstrate general understanding of how learners grow and develop kinesthetically, considering motor skills, rhythms, sensory needs, and how they are related to neurological development and physical and emotional wellness.
  2. Demonstrate and apply instructional cues, prompts, physical activities and feedback to facilitate the development of basic motor skills, rhythms, and wellness.
  3. Identify and explain proper risk strategies, safety precautions, supervision, and legal issues relevant to children in the traditional classroom, gymnasium, and/or playground.
  4. Identify and explain state and health department safety procedures to enhance the physical and emotional wellness of children in the elementary classroom.
  5. Apply knowledge of the Washington Health and Physical Education state learning standards to lesson planning that includes but is not limited to culturally and trauma informed and responsive practices.
  6. Demonstrate general knowledge of the prevention and management of common illnesses, diseases, and personal safety.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to access resources (including technology) for adapting curriculum to individual student needs in health and physical education.
