MUSC 125: Guitar I

This course is designed for the beginning student with little or no guitar experience. Students will gain a familiarity with the history and repertoire of the guitar to establish a solid foundation for exploring the broader world of the classical guitar. They will become proficient in reading music and playing scales and arpeggios. This course will serve as an introduction to the styles and techniques of the classical guitar and students will learn to perform music in an ensemble setting. This class may include students from multiple sections. (Elective)

  1. Identify the parts of the guitar and their functions.
  2. Demonstrate basic guitar tuning techniques.
  3. Recognize the components of musical notation and chord charts and be able to produce and perform music from it.
  4. Perform exercises such as playing through scales, arpeggios, chord charts, strumming patterns, and rhythms.
  5. Describe classical guitar techniques through exploration of the history and repertoire of the instrument and practice.
  6. Perform basic classical guitar repertoire while staying on the beat and in the time signature.
